Global TV News: Why Lyme disease is on the rise, explained

[CanLyme Note: Both AIDS and Lyme disease arose as an issue in the late 1970’s with the first case of Lyme reported in Quebec in 1977. As pointed out in this piece, since then there have been over 11,000 clinical trials for AIDS yet only 60 for Lyme disease. Lyme disease research funding in Canada is abysmal and is directed only to the one research network mentioned in this piece, members of whom have been the biggest roadblock to good ethical science and research on Lyme disease for decades. Other Canadian researchers who refuse to belong to this very conflicted network are denied funding due to the policies of the Canadian Institute of Health Research and the Public Health Agency of Canada.  No patient stakeholder or patient experts were consulted when setting these tunnel vision policies despite the many requests.]

“There’s an increasing number of people across North America and around the world contracting Lyme disease. Lyme used to be considered an isolated disease found in North America and parts of Europe but it’s now found in 80 countries worldwide.

Its rise in North America has been particularly alarming. In the U.S. alone, the Centers for Disease Control says there are some 30,000 cases a year, but the CDC concedes the number is likely significantly higher than that. The Lyme Disease Association estimates the number is closer to a staggering 400,000 a year.”
