With peak tick season upon the island, a Salt Spring-based researcher warns residents that a few basic precautions can prevent a world of grief.

Reuben Kaufman has pulled, poked and probed thousands of ticks for the sake of science since he began to research the arachnids in the late ‘60s.

Kaufman is a big name in the world of tick research. He has delved into topics like salivary gland development, hormonal effects on tick reproductive systems and ixodid tick engorgement factors. On a less academic level, he said, the rise of tick season is always a good reminder for people across southwestern British Columbia to stay alert.
