Remembering Jim Wilson

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my dear friend, colleague, and former board director of the G. Magnotta Foundation, Jim Wilson.

I first met Jim in 2004 after reaching out to CanLyme in the depths of despair, as my husband Gabe battled a mysterious illness. I still remember hearing Jim’s kind voice on the other end of the line which provided me with the comfort and support I desperately needed then.

Jim guided me through the complexities of the healthcare system with empathy and patience, connecting me with the resources necessary to find a solution for Gabe’s suffering. Jim would play a pivotal role in finally uncovering a diagnosis for Gabe and initiating the treatment he needed.

Jim’s dedication and selflessness were truly remarkable. His immense heart and genuine concern for others set him apart as I quickly learned that I was just one of many individuals across the country who Jim’s kindness and compassion had touched.

I will cherish the countless, sometimes daily, phone calls Jim and I had to discuss strategies surrounding Lyme disease. Our lengthy conversations were enlightening and thought-provoking, often veering into topics about various worldly issues. But Lyme disease was our shared hot topic!

Having both lost loved ones to Lyme disease, we were passionate about the cause and determined to break through bureaucratic and political barriers at every level of government to make a difference, effect change, and ensure that patients were heard. And Jim made a HUGE difference! He was a great mentor, and I learned so much from him.

Soon after meeting Jim, I became a Director of CanLyme, and in 2012, Jim was appointed a Director of the G. Magnotta Foundation. Jim played a critical role in helping me establish the G. Magnotta Foundation Lab at the University of Guelph.

His assistance was invaluable and aligned perfectly with my vision, which soon became his vision, as well. Our lives were intertwined when it came to Lyme disease and together, we fought tirelessly for the cause and raised funds to support it. However, it was Jim who truly shined the lymelight on Lyme disease over the decades. His dedication and passion for the cause were unmatched, and his impact in the fight against Lyme disease will not be forgotten. Jim was a true champion for those affected by this devastating disease.

I once read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone. From the beginning… to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth and then spoke the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For the dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth… and now only those who loved her know what the little line is worth. For it matters not how much we own – the cars, the house, the cash – what matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash (1954 – 2024).

Jim, you had an amazing and memorable dash! I will miss your wisdom and insight and remember your laugh, love for your family, genuine kindness and sincerity, and profound belief that everyone is inherently good. God bless you and may you rest in peace, my friend.
