Vancouver Sun: Longtime B.C. environmental activist Gwen Barlee dies of cancer

[CanLyme Note: Gwen contracted Lyme disease many years ago and was a well spoken activist who despised the double-talk and arrogance of the bureaucrats who have misled Canadians for years on Lyme disease. She was a great friend and ally of the Lyme community and will be deeply missed.]

Gwen Barlee, a longtime environmental activist with one of B.C.’s leading wilderness preservation groups, died Thursday.

Barlee had been battling cancer for about a year, according to Ecojustice executive director Devon Page. She had recently been on leave from her post as national policy director with the Wilderness Committee, the largest membership-based wilderness preservation group in the country.

“Gwen was a good friend. She started at the Wilderness Committee at the same time I started at Ecojustice and was my client for nine years. But, I know she worked with so many people.” said Page in an email shared with Postmedia News.

  1. Gwen’s passing is the loss of “great hero” in The Lyme Community for the tremendous effort and achievements she accomplished.
    She will be deeply missed.

  2. I am extremely sorry to hear this sad news. I had opportunity to communicate with her via email for many years and also had opportunity to meet her couple of times in person. She was a very caring and nice individual. She was very curious and always eager to find the truth and have had great faith in science in which we had a common tie. Her untimely departure suddenly a great loos for our society, I would say for Canada and BC particularly. I would appreciate if you convey my message to her family.
    With heartfelt condolences
