Tick-borne disease case numbers: What do they really mean?

When you see the statistic that Redding had only 10 Lyme disease cases in 2012, you might ask, How can that be?
To help put the yearly Redding case numbers in perspective, recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that there are approximately 10 times more people diagnosed with Lyme disease than the yearly reported number. Even when factoring in the CDC times 10 multiplier, bringing Redding’s 2012 case numbers to 100, it still seems a bit low, especially from a doctor’s office perspective.
