Letter to editor, Niagara – Lyme disease information timely

Re: Dog ticks not the same as deer ticks, letters, May 23rd

I am writing in response to a reply to the column by Dorothy Turcotte; this was a very timely letter to publish actually, because May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. We were very pleased to have the CN Tower, Niagara Falls and  the Peace Bridge light up green in support of the much needed awareness.

Yes, the press has “a great responsibility for delivering proper information to the public.”

I am the secretary for the Lyme Disease Association of Ontario and recently started the Niagara Area support chapter. I am a Fort Erie resident who was infected with Lyme disease while wild turkey hunting with my husband. I went undiagnosed and untreated for almost 8 years. This disease has affected my heart, brain, central nervous system, eyes, etc. I know full well what ignorance and lack of education leads to. I personally know of several people who have been infected in the “Golden Horseshoe”.
